Dahlia Care

Dahlias are big, bold flowers with long, sturdy stems that make them perfect for vases. They are perfect for lighting up any room. Dahlias have a relatively short vase life compared to most flowers; however, with proper care, the flowers put on a vibrant show for up to five days.

  1. Place the dahlias in a bucket filled with water. With the stems under water, use a share knife to tip about 1 inch from the bottom of the stems. Make the cut at an angle, which allows the plant to absorb more water in the vase.

  2. Make sure the vase is cleaned well.

  3. Fill the vase with warm water, which flows into the stems faster than cool water and prolongs the vase life of the flowers. The best temperature for the water is approximately 110 degrees F. Remove leaves or buds that will be under water, as leaves remaining in the water decay and shorten the vase life of the dahlias.

  4. Add a packet of floral preservative to the water, then arrange the dahlias in the vase.

  5. Place the bouquet in a cool room for one to hours before placing it on display. Keep the flowers as cool as possible and don’t place the bouquet near warm appliances, heating vents or sunny windows.

  6. Check the water every day and replenish as needed. Replace the water with fresh water whenever it begins to look dark. Before returning the dahlias to the vase, hold the stems under water and re-cut about ¼ inch from the bottom.
